US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin signed a major defense cooperation agreement at the Pentagon on Monday. The new partnership aims to bolster regional deterrence and enhance security ties between Washington and Jakarta.
“This signifies the strength and potential of our security relationship,” Hegseth said in a Department of Defense statement. He added that the deal advances a “shared commitment to peace through strength” in the Asia Pacific region.
Under the agreement, both nations will work on co-developing sophisticated asymmetric capabilities. The partnership focuses on next-generation defense technologies in the maritime, subsurface, and autonomous systems domains.
Airspace access negotiations
The signing follows reports that the US is seeking blanket overflight access for military aircraft through Indonesian airspace. While Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reportedly approved the proposal, the Indonesian Ministry of Defence stated that discussions regarding a 'Letter of Intent' are still ongoing.
Jakarta’s Defense Ministry clarified that any draft regarding overflight is preliminary and not legally binding. The ministry emphasized that Indonesia maintains full authority and oversight over its national airspace.
“Authority, control, and oversight over Indonesian airspace rest entirely in our country,” said Rico Ricardo Sirait, a spokesman for Minister Sjafrie. He noted that any potential regulation will guarantee Indonesia’s ability to approve or reject activities in its territory.
The security relationship between the two nations is expanding, with both militaries participating in more than 170 joint exercises annually. Sjafrie expressed enthusiasm for the enduring nature of the partnership, stating the two sides are working for the mutual benefit of their national interests.
President Prabowo’s diplomatic schedule remains busy following the agreement. He is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Tuesday, following recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding oil.
