The European Union has moved forward with a major restructuring of its migration policy, aiming to accelerate the deportation of rejected asylum seekers and establish detention centers in foreign countries. According to France 24, the new regulatory framework represents a significant shift in how the bloc manages border security and asylum processing.
The policy changes have drawn immediate scrutiny from human rights organizations. Critics have compared the new measures to the aggressive immigration policies previously championed by the Trump administration in the United States, citing concerns over the treatment of migrants and the outsourcing of asylum responsibilities.
Despite the backlash, European officials maintain that the framework remains within the bounds of international law. Camille Le Coz, Director of the Migration Policy Institute of Europe, addressed the legal framing of the deal in an interview with France 24’s Mark Owen.
"The way the policy has been framed in the EU law is to make it compatible with international law," Le Coz stated.
