Microsoft will officially shut down its Outlook Lite application in May 2026, stripping the app of its core email functionality, according to expansion.mx.

Once the shutdown is complete, users will no longer be able to check messages, view calendars, or navigate their inboxes. While the app may remain openable for a short period, it will effectively be non-functional.

Microsoft confirmed that the decommissioning will not result in the loss of user data. Emails, contacts, and calendars will remain safely stored in the cloud, and existing accounts will not be deleted.

Users can continue to access their information through other platforms. The company recommends migrating to the full Microsoft Outlook app for Android, using a web browser, or configuring accounts within alternative mail applications.

A phased transition

The shutdown follows a progressive withdrawal strategy that began in October 2025. At that time, Microsoft stopped making the application available for new downloads.

The company stated the move aims to reduce product fragmentation and focus development efforts on a single, unified user experience.

For users who relied on Outlook Lite for its low data and storage footprint, the transition may require using a larger, more resource-heavy application. However, Microsoft noted it has worked to optimize the performance of the main app across various device levels.

This shift mirrors recent changes within Microsoft's ecosystem. The tech giant has previously consolidated services into larger platforms, such as moving communication focus from Skype to Microsoft Teams.
