Investigation into the triple homicide in La Reina

New developments in the investigation into the triple homicide of the Cruz-Coke family in La Reina suggest that the suspect, Jorge Iván Ugalde Parraguez, may have had access to zopiclone before the attack. WhatsApp records included in the investigative file show a direct connection between this medication and the sedation of the victims.

According to reports from cnnchile.com, toxicological tests performed on the children of Eduardo Cruz-Coke detected the presence of zopiclone in their systems. The minors were allegedly sedated prior to the crime, which took place on October 18.

In the analyzed messages, Ugalde is seen conversing with his doctor to request a change in his treatment. The accused asked to switch from zopiclone to Zolpidem, arguing that the former medication was "too bitter."

Both medications are controlled hypnotics in Chile. Their sale is strictly regulated and requires a retained medical prescription.

Financial motives and upcoming hearing

The Oriente Prosecutor's Office will present these new findings this Thursday during a hearing requested by the defendant's counsel. The Public Ministry maintains that the victim's brother-in-law planned the murders for financial reasons related to a shared real estate partnership.

The defense for Ugalde Parraguez is seeking to introduce new lines of investigation during the judicial proceeding. Lawyers plan to present expert reports, security camera footage analysis, and messages extracted from the victims' phones.

The legal team intends to place particular emphasis on information retrieved from the devices belonging to the photographer's ex-wife, Carolina Grellet.
