Students and teachers at Liceo José Victorino Lastarria successfully thwarted an attack involving incendiary devices this Monday. The incident, which involved the use of Molotov cocktails, resulted in the detention of two minors on the school grounds.
The attackers, dressed in white overalls, entered the premises with the intent to cause damage. The school community responded immediately, using fire extinguishers and physical force to drive the individuals out and prevent the devices from being detonated inside the classrooms.
A teacher at the school alerted the police after reporting the presence of incendiary materials and the intrusion of individuals in suspicious clothing into the school building.
Legal status of those involved
Following the confrontation, authorities identified two students as responsible for bringing the hazardous materials onto the property. The first minor, aged 15, was taken into police custody and is scheduled to face formal charges this Thursday.
The second individual, aged 13, was released into the care of his parents. Due to his age and legal status regarding criminal responsibility, the legal proceedings for this minor follow a different protocol than those for the 15-year-old.
The Santiago Municipality confirmed that classes have been suspended at the school for Tuesday. The suspension specifically affects students from seventh grade through senior year.
The decision was made to ensure the safety of the student body while security conditions at the campus are assessed following the recent acts of violence.
