A Sudden Shift in Allegiance

In an unexpected turn of events that has reverberated through the Russian information space, Ilya Remeslo—a prominent pro-government blogger and activist known for his history of filing denunciations against opposition figures—has launched a scathing critique of President Vladimir Putin. Once a vocal defender of Kremlin policies, Remeslo has now publicly declared Putin an illegitimate president and demanded that he face trial as a "war criminal and thief."

According to reports from The Moscow Times, Remeslo’s disillusionment was expressed through a series of posts on his Telegram channel, where he outlined a detailed list of grievances against the current state of the Russian government. This shift marks a dramatic departure for a man who previously built his reputation by targeting Alexei Navalny and other opposition voices.

Six Pillars of Dissatisfaction

Remeslo justified his newfound opposition by citing six primary areas of failure. At the forefront of his critique is the ongoing war in Ukraine, which he views as a strategic and moral catastrophe. Beyond the conflict, he pointed to the tightening of censorship both in traditional media and online, the removal of presidential term limits, a perceived lack of respect for the citizenry, the pursuit of excessive luxury by the ruling elite, and the government's failure to deliver on its foundational promises.

Of particular note was Remeslo’s frustration regarding Putin’s 2017 pledge to avoid following a "Chinese path" of governance. Remeslo argued that the president has failed to improve the lives of ordinary Russians, opting instead to prioritize the personal enrichment of his inner circle. Furthermore, he criticized the current climate of instability, highlighting the increasing frequency of drone attacks within Russian territory and the stifling of digital freedoms as evidence that the administration has lost its grip on national security.

Targeting the Presidential Administration

Remeslo did not limit his criticism to the president alone. He explicitly accused the presidential administration—and specifically Sergei Kiriyenko, its first deputy head—of orchestrating campaigns to discredit opposition voices. Interestingly, the blogger admitted to having past financial and professional ties to the administration, noting that he had previously worked to implement ideas for the state. However, he claimed that his suggestions were frequently ignored, leading to a breakdown in his cooperation with the authorities.

Regarding the occupied territories in Ukraine, Remeslo questioned the utility of these regions to the average Russian, describing them as a significant financial burden that drains resources better spent on domestic development.

Potential Legal Repercussions

Despite the gravity of his statements, legal experts observing the situation note that Remeslo has carefully crafted his language to avoid direct, actionable calls for insurrection. Nevertheless, his public stance makes him a prime candidate for being designated as a "foreign agent," a label frequently used by the Kremlin to marginalize dissenters.

Remeslo has acknowledged the risks associated with his pivot, stating that he is prepared for any consequences, including legal action. Whether this move is a genuine ideological shift or a calculated maneuver in a shifting political landscape remains a subject of intense debate among observers of Russian politics.
