For the second time in his administration, President José Antonio Kast convened an expanded political committee at the Cerro Castillo Presidential Palace to coordinate the legislative strategy for the National Reconstruction Bill. Held at La Moniente Palace, the meeting brought together cabinet ministers and lawmakers from the Republican, Chile Vamos, Democrat, and Social Christian parties, according to biobiochile.cl.

The administration aims to introduce a massive reform package comprising approximately 40 measures. The initiative covers critical sectors, including post-fire reconstruction, economic revitalization, fiscal discipline, and national security. The proposal is set to serve as the centerpiece of the government's agenda for the first half of the year.

During the session, the President sought to unify his coalition following internal tensions that emerged leading up to the summit. Some members of the governing bloc had suggested splitting the bill or including specific concessions, such as removing VAT on medicines, to secure legislative support.

Seeking consensus and investment certainty

Deputy Jorge Alessandri, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, defended efforts to refine the bill during a press briefing. Alessandri clarified that parliamentary suggestions are part of the standard legislative process and do not constitute undue pressure on the Executive branch.

“We want a strong bill to be introduced; we want to improve it and send a high-quality proposal to the Senate to jumpstart Chile's economy,” the lawmaker stated, as reported by biobiochile.cl.

Alessandri also urged the government to build broader alliances, noting the need to engage with parties such as the People's Party (PDG) to ensure the stability of the reforms. The deputy warned that passing legislation with razor-thin margins fails to provide the stability necessary for national growth.

“If we are competing with Peru, Argentina, and Canada for various mining, port, and infrastructure projects, the more robust these bills are, the more certainty we provide to investors,” the lawmaker affirmed.

The Speaker also called for active listening across the political spectrum, including proposals from Franco Parisi's United Front of Parties (FUD) and the opposition.

“We must talk to everyone and listen to proposals rather than complaints. There is the FUD proposal from Parisi, the proposal regarding medicines. We should also listen to the proposals from the PPD and the PS,” Alessandri emphasized.

Regarding potential resistance from the opposition—led by the Broad Front and the Communist Party—the deputy maintained that the legislative process should not be an obstacle if there is a shared consensus on the need for job creation and economic growth.
