Agustín Romero, president of the Chamber of Deputies' Finance Committee, has proposed holding legislative sessions during the upcoming district week to advance the government's major reconstruction reform, according to cooperativa.cl.
Romero, a member of the Republican Party, expressed a desire to move the project forward quickly. He indicated that, depending on the level of urgency, the committee should ideally vote on the measure before May 21.
Because the upcoming week is designated as a district week for lawmakers, Romero noted that the committee would lose a week of legislative work unless an agreement is reached to convene.
"Unless there is a unanimous agreement that we can hold sessions, we would have one less week of legislative work and could resume at the beginning of May with some hearings," the lawmaker stated.
Fast-tracking the reform
Romero confirmed that the executive branch's massive reform will enter the legislative process with a high degree of urgency, either as an immediate discussion or under extreme urgency.
The Republican deputy emphasized his personal availability to address the issue despite the legislative break. He noted that he hopes all parliamentarians will be available to attend to a social emergency during the district week.
"A mí me gustaría, yo estoy disponible y espero que todos los parlamentarios estemos disponibles de poder atender una urgencia social durante la semana distrital, que creo que es importante este tema," Romero said, according to the report.
He added that the Finance Ministry has issued an invitation to legislate with a sense of urgency. The goal, according to the deputy, is to change lives in Chile and provide positive signals to families awaiting necessary government action.
"La invitación que nos hace Hacienda es que legislemos con el sentido de urgencia para que le cambiemos la vida a Chile y podamos entregarle algo positivo para muchas familias que están esperando estas señales tan necesarias," Romero concluded.
