A massive overnight aerial assault launched by Russia on Monday resulted in at least nine deaths and dozens of injuries across Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s air force, the offensive was characterized by an unprecedented scale, involving 656 drones and 73 missiles directed at targets in Kyiv, Dnipro, Járkov, and beyond.

The human toll remains under assessment as emergency services continue to clear debris. While initial reports from La Tercera indicated five fatalities, updated figures from Ukrainian authorities cited by Al Jazeera confirmed at least nine deaths. The number of wounded also fluctuates across reports, with Al Jazeera noting 58 injured in Kyiv alone, including two children, while other regional reports suggest the total count of wounded across the country exceeds 55.

In the capital, Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the fatalities and urged residents to remain in shelters as air defense systems engaged incoming threats. "Explosions in the city. Air defence forces are working! Stay in shelters!" Klitschko stated via social media early Monday. The city faced multiple waves of strikes starting at 1:30 a.m., with subsequent explosions recorded at 2:15 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., resulting in power outages, burning vehicles in the Podilskyi district, and structural damage to residential buildings.

Dnipro suffered significant losses, with regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha reporting five deaths and 25 injuries, three of whom remain in serious condition. Hanzha noted that multiple residential buildings were struck by projectiles, causing partial collapses of low-rise housing. In Járkov, Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed that ten people, including a child, were wounded by drone and missile impacts that damaged administrative buildings, private vehicles, and multi-story residential complexes.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence characterized the operation as a "massive strike" using "high-precision weapons." The Kremlin claimed the bombardment successfully targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, as well as energy and transport infrastructure utilized for military logistics in the regions of Zaporizhia, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk. The assault occurred just days after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly warned that intelligence indicated Moscow was preparing a major offensive.

The conflict also saw cross-border repercussions during the same period. Al Jazeera reported that a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person in Russia's Kursk region, according to Governor Alexander Khinshtein. Additionally, local authorities in the southwestern city of Krasnodar confirmed that a separate drone attack ignited a fire at an oil refinery.
