Jihadist militants launched a fresh wave of deadly attacks across central Mali, resulting in a death toll that has surpassed 70 people in recent days. Local officials confirmed the escalating severity of the situation on Saturday, noting that Islamist armed groups have intensified their assaults on villages throughout the region.

Security sources and local representatives reported that the violence occurred in a series of coordinated strikes. The attacks have left communities reeling, with residents expressing frustration over the perceived inability or unwillingness of state security forces to intervene during the raids.

One local youth leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, described the emotional toll on the community, stating, "Our hearts are bleeding." The leader alleged that nearby army detachments failed to respond to repeated pleas for assistance as the violence unfolded.

Security analysts monitoring the Sahel region have characterized the situation as increasingly dire. Reports indicate that the militants are systematically targeting villages that have refused to enter into local cooperation agreements with the insurgent groups.

The recent surge in activity follows a period of heightened instability in Mali. Last month, the security landscape was marked by an unprecedented joint assault on the ruling junta, involving both the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

Since that joint operation, the security situation has deteriorated significantly, with several northern territories reportedly falling under the control of various armed groups. Security sources cited by France 24 expressed deep concern as the insurgency continues to expand its operational reach into the central regions of the country.

As of Saturday, the Malian government has not issued a comprehensive statement regarding the latest death toll. Authorities have also remained silent on the specific allegations concerning the failure of military detachments to provide support to the affected villages.
