Tokyo will host a delegation of 30 NATO envoys to discuss regional security and the stability of US-led alliances. The visit focuses on the changing nature of global security and the potential for shifts in American foreign policy.

The envoys will hold talks on China’s expanding influence in the region and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, according to Japan's public broadcaster NHK. These discussions will also address the volatility of the current global security order.

Expanding diplomatic networks

The scale of the upcoming meeting indicates a shift in Japan's strategic focus. Ben Ascione, an assistant professor of politics and international relations at Waseda University in Tokyo, noted the significance of the delegation.

“A delegation of this size underlines just how important this is to both sides,” Ascione said. He added that the visit reflects a “long-term trend” in how Japan engages with transatlantic partners.

Japan established a permanent mission to NATO in Brussels in January last year. This mission serves as a cornerstone for Japan's efforts to integrate its security interests with those of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

This diplomatic expansion is part of a larger pattern among the so-called Indo-Pacific Four. This group includes South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, all of which are working to deepen their security cooperation with the alliance.

Tokyo and the transatlantic alliance share a common interest in managing the risks of an unpredictable global order. The high-level visit highlights the growing alignment between Pacific and European security priorities.
