Israel’s military issued fresh evacuation orders for residents of southern Lebanon on Wednesday, signaling a continuation of its offensive against Hezbollah despite ongoing diplomatic efforts in the United States. The move marks the first such order since direct negotiations between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors began in Washington on Tuesday.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the Washington meetings as a "historic opportunity" for peace, according to France 24. However, the optimism expressed by some Lebanese officials has been tempered by the reality of continued airstrikes and forced displacement.
A widening crisis at home
The conflict has displaced at least one million people across Lebanon, including those forced to flee from the entirety of the south and Beirut’s southern suburbs, Al Jazeera reported. As the state struggles to provide for the displaced, Lebanon’s migrant worker population—numbering over 200,000—has begun filling critical gaps by organizing community-led food distribution.
Myra Aragon, who operates a community kitchen called Tres Marias north of Beirut, prepares meals for approximately 200 people daily. "These are bay leaves," Aragon said while seasoning a chicken afritada stew. "These are anise stars and this is black pepper."
Abdel Halim Abdallah, a project coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Lebanon, noted that the migrant community faces persistent restrictions while navigating the war. "They show love and affection and solidarity through food," Abdallah told Al Jazeera. "It is a unifying thing."
International friction and rising casualties
The humanitarian toll remains high. Al Jazeera reported that two Sudanese nationals were killed in an Israeli strike in the Jnah neighborhood of Beirut on April 5, followed by the death of an Ethiopian national in Tallet el Khayat on April 8. Meanwhile, in Gaza, local civil defense agencies reported that a toddler was among 10 people killed in fresh Israeli strikes on Tuesday, despite a ceasefire that has been in place since October 2025.
Diplomatic tensions are also escalating elsewhere. Italy announced it has suspended the renewal of a 20-year-old defense agreement with Israel, Al Jazeera reported. The decision follows accusations that Israeli forces fired warning shots at a convoy of Italian peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon.
Complicating the Washington negotiations is the role of Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the US. Critics have labeled Leiter a "problematic negotiator," citing his background as a former soldier who participated in previous invasions of Lebanon and his history as a pro-settler activist, according to Al Jazeera.
