China is preparing to ship new man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) to Iran in the coming weeks, according to U.S. intelligence assessments cited by CNN. The planned transfer marks a notable shift in Beijing’s support for Tehran, moving beyond previous dual-use technology agreements.

Intelligence officials suggest that Beijing intends to obscure the weapons' origin by routing the shipments through third countries. This maneuver is reportedly designed to bypass international scrutiny as Tehran seeks to replenish its military stockpiles during the current ceasefire.

The FN-6 missile platform

The systems in question are part of China’s FN (FeiNu) family of portable missiles, which includes the FN-6 and the upgraded FN-16. These weapons are capable of engaging aerial targets at altitudes of up to 4 kilometers. China has previously exported these systems to a variety of nations, including Sudan, Bangladesh, Syria, and Myanmar.

In recent conflicts, the effectiveness of the FN-6 has been demonstrated in field conditions. Rebels from the Kachin Independence Army in Myanmar notably used the platform to shoot down a military junta helicopter.

Beijing has denied the allegations. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington dismissed the reports, stating, "Beijing has never provided weapons to any party to the conflict and adheres to its international obligations." The embassy further urged the United States to cease making what it described as baseless accusations.
