Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off during a 2-1 defeat to Leeds United, adding to a growing defensive crisis for the Argentine national team.

Martinez returned to the pitch following a two-month absence due to a left soleus muscle injury. However, his comeback ended prematurely in the 56th minute after a controversial incident involving Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

During an aerial duel, Martinez's descent resulted in him catching the striker's hair. Referee Paul Tierney reviewed the play via VAR and classified the action as "violent conduct."

The dismissal likely carries a two-match suspension under Premier League regulations. This setback prevents Martinez from gaining much much-needed playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Defensive crisis deepens for Argentina

Concerns for the Argentine national team intensified following news of a serious injury to Cristian Romero. The Tottenham Hotspur captain suffered a knee injury during a match against Sunderland after a collision with goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky.

Medical tests confirmed Romero sustained a collateral ligament injury in his knee. Doctors estimate the defender will be sidelined for five to eight weeks, effectively ending his Premier League campaign with Tottenham.

While Romero could potentially join the Argentine squad for their World Cup opener against Algeria, he will arrive with almost no competitive match fitness. The simultaneous absences of Martinez and Romero leave Argentina's backline in a precarious position less than two months before the tournament begins.
