Netflix users have a limited window to watch one of the most expensive films in cinematic history before it leaves the platform. According to xataka.com.mx, the high-budget sequel, Gladiator 2, is scheduled to remain available on the streaming service until May 29, 2026.

Released in 2024, the film arrives 24 years after the original epic. The production follows Lucius, the son of Maximus, as he fights for survival in the Colosseum and seeks to overthrow twin emperors.

High costs and box office performance

The scale of the production has drawn significant attention due to its massive budget. While The Numbers estimated the cost at $250 million, the outlet reported that sources such as The Hollywood Reporter suggest the figure skyrocketed to $310 million.

Despite the massive investment, the film's global box office gross of $410 million represents a narrow margin of profit. For comparison, the original Gladiator earned $465 million at the box office but cost $200 million less to produce, according to the report.

This financial disparity suggests Paramount may have sought to diversify revenue through streaming rights. The film features a cast including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, focusing on brutal action sequences within the historical setting of ancient Rome.

While the film aims to revitalize the peplum genre, xataka.com.mx notes that the production often operates "under the shadow of the classic starring Russell Crowe." The sequel relies heavily on action-driven entertainment to establish its own narrative identity.
