French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez is seeking to block US rapper Kanye West from performing at Marseille's Velodrome stadium this June.

A source close to the minister stated on Tuesday that Nunez is "highly determined" to cancel the June 11 concert due to the artist's history of anti-Semitic remarks.

The minister is reportedly exploring all legal possibilities to prevent the performance. Nunez discussed the potential ban with the regional prefect and the mayor of Marseille during a visit to the city last week.

Local opposition grows

Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan has already voiced his opposition to the rapper's visit. The left-wing official stated he refuses "to allow Marseille to be a showcase for those who promote hatred."

The 48-year-old rapper, who also goes by the name Ye, has faced global repercussions for his recent rhetoric. Britain has already blocked West from entering the country, leading festival organizers to cancel a scheduled July appearance.

West's recent controversies include expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler and releasing a song titled "Heil Hitler" in May 2025. He also previously advertised a swastika-themed t-shirt on his website.

While the UK has taken action, officials in the Netherlands have not yet implemented similar restrictions. Dutch Asylum and Migration Minister Bart van den Brink said last week there are currently no plans to bar the rapper from the country.

West has previously attributed his controversial conduct to his struggle with bipolar disorder.
