Inter Miami has appointed Ángel Guillermo Hoyos as the new head coach following the sudden departure of Javier Mascherano, according to latercera.com.

Mascherano announced his decision to step down from the American club on Tuesday, citing personal reasons. The Argentine manager, affectionately known as 'El Jefecito,' released a statement confirming his exit.

“I want everyone to know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as coach of Inter Miami CF,” Mascherano stated, according to the report.

He expressed gratitude toward the club's staff and the players for their collective effort. “I also want to thank the fans and the Family, because none of this would have been possible without them,” Mascherano added.

Mascherano leaves the Florida-based franchise on a high note. During the 2025 season, he led the club to its first-ever MLS Cup and oversaw a record-breaking 101 goals scored across the regular season and playoffs.

A familiar face returns to the sidelines

Club officials have identified Hoyos as the successor to manage the star-studded roster including Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Maximiliano Falcón. Hoyos, a former champion with Universidad de Chile, was already working within the club's youth academy system.

Hoyos brings extensive international experience to the first team, having managed clubs in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and the Bolivian national team. His professional history also includes coaching roles within FC Barcelona's youth divisions, where he contributed to the early development of Lionel Messi.

The connection between the two men is well-documented; Hoyos was even an invited guest at the wedding of Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo.

Inter Miami currently sits in third place in the standings with 12 points from three wins, three draws, and one loss. The team remains just four points behind league leaders Nashville SC.

Hoyos is expected to make his competitive debut with the first team this Saturday, April 18, when the Herons travel to face the Colorado Rapids.
