Coquimbo Unido match in Peru

Coquimbo Unido travels to Lima, Peru, this Tuesday, April 14, to face Universitario de Deportes in the second round of the Copa Libertadores group stage. The match is scheduled for 22:00 Chilean time at the Estadio Monumental.

Both clubs enter the fixture seeking their first victory of the tournament. Coquimbo Unido and Universitario both opened their respective campaigns with draws, specifically against Nacional and Deportes Tolima, respectively.

Local Peruvian media has positioned Universitario as the heavy favorite for the clash. According to reports from La Tercera, the Peruvian press has been dismissive of the Chilean 'Piratas,' highlighting a lack of respect for the visiting side.

During a broadcast on Movistar Deportes, commentator Diego Rebagueati minimized the threat posed by the Chilean visitors. “In U's group, Coquimbo Unido and Nacional drew. From what we saw, neither is to be feared,” Rebagliati stated.

He further emphasized the home side's advantage, noting, “In fact, I think U is a big favorite on Tuesday with Coquimbo.”

The Chilean connection in the Peruvian goal

To secure a result, Coquimbo must overcome a familiar face in the Universitario defense. Chilean goalkeeper Miguel Vargas, known as 'Manotas,' has established himself as the starting keeper for the Peruvian giants.

Vargas, a former Universidad Católica player, has maintained an impressive clean sheet record in his recent starts. His performance in the tournament opener against Deportes Tolima, where he recorded four crucial saves, was vital in securing the draw.

After stints with Chilean clubs including Cobresal and Unión La Calera, Vargas found consistent playing time in Peru. He previously played for Cienciano and Deportivo Garcilaso before joining Universitario for the 2025 campaign.

Following the departure of Uruguayan keeper Sebastián Britos to Peñarol, Vargas secured the starting role over Peruvian competition like Diego Romero. His presence provides a significant tactical hurdle for the Coquimbo attack.
