Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old forward for Berekum Chelsea FC, was killed Sunday after armed attackers ambushed the team bus as it returned from a Ghana Premier League match. The incident occurred following the team’s fixture against Samartex in Samreboi.
According to the club, the bus was intercepted by a group of masked men wielding guns and assault rifles. The attackers reportedly blocked the road to force the vehicle to stop.
"The men started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse," Berekum Chelsea said in a statement. As the gunfire intensified, players and staff members fled the vehicle and sought cover in the nearby bushes.
Investigation and security response
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the death and expressed "profound shock and deep sorrow" over the loss. The organization described Frimpong as a "promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league."
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the ambush, though no suspects have been apprehended. The GFA stated it is currently working with the club and law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
In response to the attack, the GFA announced plans to review and strengthen security protocols for all teams traveling to away matches. The association aims to prevent similar incidents from occurring during future competitions.
Frimpong had been playing for Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC since January. He had recorded two goals in 13 appearances for the club and was scheduled to remain with the team through the end of the current season.
