According to reporting from FayerWayer, the late Apple founder believed that meetings should not serve as status symbols or venues for hierarchical validation, but rather as surgical work sessions where every attendee holds an indispensable technical role.

Jobs championed a management philosophy that limited meeting attendance to a group small enough to be fed by two pizzas. This approach was specifically designed to combat the organizational tendency to prioritize consensus over innovation, a process Jobs felt often reduced groundbreaking ideas into safe, generic compromises. He argued that large committees act as a buffer against progress, effectively stalling the pace of development and operational performance.

Central to Jobs' efficiency model was the concept of the Directly Responsible Individual, or DRI. Under this structure, every specific task or line of code was assigned to one person who held absolute responsibility for its success. If a meeting was called regarding that task, the DRI was required to attend, while any secondary profiles that did not contribute directly to the engineering or design of the product were routinely barred from the room.

Historical records from Apple indicate that Jobs frequently expelled staff from conference rooms if he determined their presence was not essential to solving the technical problem at hand. This rigorous policy aimed to eradicate the "passive spectator," an employee whose presence lengthens debates and creates a massive opportunity cost by pulling engineers away from their primary duties.
