Mercedes-Benz has unveiled an update to its flagship electric sedan, the EQS, introducing a significant boost in driving range and a new electronic steering system, according to latercera.com.

The EQS 450+ version now achieves up to 920 kilometers of autonomy under the WLTP cycle. This represents a nearly 13% increase in range compared to its predecessor, according to the report.

Engineers achieved this efficiency gain through a new battery chemistry and the implementation of an 800-volt electrical architecture. This high-voltage system allows for ultra-fast charging capabilities.

Under ideal conditions, the vehicle can recover approximately 320 kilometers of range in only 10 minutes of charging. This improvement aims to make long-distance travel more practical for electric vehicle owners.

Electronic steering and advanced sensors

The update introduces 'steer-by-wire' technology, which replaces the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels with electronic signals. This system improves maneuverability at low speeds and enhances on-road comfort.

This mechanical removal also allows for new interior configurations. Mercedes-Benz is now able to offer a yoke-style steering wheel inspired by aviation design.

For driver assistance, the model incorporates a full ecosystem of sensors, including cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. These components work alongside artificial intelligence-based software to provide advanced assisted driving functions.

The update focuses on technological sophistication rather than a complete aesthetic overhaul. While the aerodynamic silhouette remains the same, the changes center on efficiency and connectivity.

Mercedes-Benz is positioning the updated EQS as a cornerstone of its global electrification strategy. The manufacturer is focusing its efforts on autonomy, connectivity, and modern luxury through these technical refinements.
