The Chilean Financial Market Commission (CMF) is monitoring potential exposure to Anthropic’s new AI model, Claude Mythos, following reports that the technology has identified thousands of critical software vulnerabilities.
The CMF confirmed to Emol that it has initiated contact with regulated industries and the National Cybersecurity Agency. The regulator is evaluating the situation as part part of a broader global assessment of AI-related risks.
The move follows high-level discussions in the United States last week. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell met with executives from the nation's largest banks to address the risks associated with the new AI model.
Claude Mythos has demonstrated the ability to identify thousands of vulnerabilities within operating systems, web browsers, and essential software programs. Many of these flaws have reportedly remained hidden within digital systems for years.
Critical Infrastructure Risks
According to reports from the Financial Times, the AI model detected a vulnerability in OpenBSD that had existed for 27 years. OpenBSD is a highly secure operating system used globally to power firewalls and other critical digital infrastructure.
The discovery of such long-standing flaws has prompted immediate restrictive measures. Anthropic has limited access to the Claude Mythos model to only 40 organizations.
These organizations are specifically tasked with the development and maintenance of critical software infrastructure. The restriction is intended to allow these entities to patch vulnerabilities before the information reaches unauthorized actors.
Anthropic confirmed it is currently engaged in discussions with US officials. These talks aim to evaluate the "cybernetic, offensive, and defensive" capabilities of the new model.
The CMF stated its mandate is to "ensure that all risks, including those related to the use of AI, are adequately addressed by local entities." The regulator continues to monitor the impact of the technology on the local financial landscape.
