Police in La Plata, Argentina, have detained a 32-year-old Chilean woman following the discovery of her three-month-old daughter's body at a university construction site.

Authorities identified the suspect as Camila V.R. Investigators are currently investigating whether the infant was abandoned alive at the site or moved there after death.

An employee at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) discovered the infant's body within a construction zone. The worker also found the baby's birth certificate next to the remains, allowing for rapid identification.

Investigation into homicide charges

The case, initially registered as an inquiry into the causes of death, has been upgraded to homicide. Prosecutor Virginia Bravo requested the intervention of the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) after the body was found on university grounds.

The child's father reported that the family had been at the Children's Hospital in Buenos Aires for a consultation when the infant and her mother disappeared. He stated they lost sight of them suddenly during the visit.

Authorities confirmed that V.R. has a prior diagnosis of schizophrenia. While she was initially not detained, she was later transferred to a federal police facility for questioning.

Federal Judge Alejo Ramos Padilla, presiding over Federal Criminal and Correctional Court No. 1, has ordered the collection of testimonies from UNLP employees and construction workers at the site. The court is also reviewing local security camera footage to reconstruct the woman's movements from the hospital to the university.

An autopsy is pending to determine the exact circumstances of the infant's death. The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors seek to establish whether the abandonment occurred at the construction site.
