Pope Leo XIV signaled a refusal to escalate tensions with the White House on Monday, stating he has no intention to debate US President Donald Trump. The pontiff addressed the issue while aboard the papal plane, en route to Algeria for a diplomatic visit to Africa.

President Trump had previously criticized the Pope for his comments regarding the ongoing war between the United States and Iran. The diplomatic friction follows the President’s recent order to blockade the Strait of Hormuz after negotiations between Washington and Tehran collapsed.

A message of peace

"I am not a politician," the Pope told reporters accompanying him on the flight. "I have no intention to debate with (Trump). The message is the same: to promote peace."

The Pope’s comments come at a volatile time for global energy markets and international diplomacy. The decision to blockade the Hormuz Strait has drawn significant scrutiny from international observers, with many fearing the move will further destabilize the region.

By distancing himself from a direct political confrontation, the Pope maintains his focus on his first official visit to Africa as head of the Catholic Church. Vatican officials have emphasized that the pontiff’s mission remains strictly pastoral and humanitarian, even as geopolitical crises continue to dominate the global news cycle.

While the White House has yet to issue a formal response to the Pope’s latest comments, the administration remains focused on the military and economic implications of the standoff in the Middle East. The blockade has already triggered a sharp surge in oil prices, complicating Washington's strategic ties with other global powers, including China.
