A new study conducted by researchers at the SunPork Group and Massey University suggests that alternative housing for sows does not compromise production outcomes. The research, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, found that the 'Maternity Ring' system performs at a level similar to traditional farrowing crates for first-lactation sows.

The findings offer a potential path forward for farmers looking to modernize animal housing. Farrowing crates have long been the industry standard for protecting piglets, but the Maternity Ring design aims to provide more space and freedom of movement for the sow while maintaining safety.

Comparing housing systems

Researchers monitored sows during their first lactation cycle to evaluate whether the alternative housing environment impacted output. The data showed no significant decline in performance metrics when comparing the Maternity Ring to the more restrictive, traditional crate environment.

Lead author Kate J. Plush of the SunPork Group oversaw the investigation. The study involved a multi-disciplinary team, including Kirsty L. Chidgey from Massey University and colleagues from SunPork’s Australian operations.

By matching the performance of conventional methods, the Maternity Ring provides producers with a viable alternative. This allows for facility updates that align with shifting agricultural standards without sacrificing the productivity of the first-lactation period.

The study highlights that structural changes in housing do not necessarily result in production losses. As the agricultural sector continues to examine animal welfare, evidence-based alternatives like the Maternity Ring are becoming increasingly relevant for facility planning and long-term farm management.
