The German Football Federation (DFB) announced late Friday it will not boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This decision follows internal debate spurred by calls to protest recent political actions and statements by United States President Donald Trump. The DFB stated its commitment to upholding the positive global impact of the tournament.

The federation, in a formal statement, emphasized its stance that sport should strengthen unifying forces rather than be prevented from doing so. This move serves as a public counterpoint to suggestions made last week by DFB Vice President Oke Gottlich, who advocated for serious consideration of a boycott. Gottlich, who also heads Bundesliga club St Pauli, cited recent US actions as justification for protest.

DFB officials noted that internal debates concerning sports policy should remain within the organization, a clear rebuke to the public nature of Gottlich's proposal. The federation confirmed that a boycott is not presently under consideration as preparations for the tournament proceed. Preparatory work involves ongoing contact with political, security, business, and sports representatives ahead of the June 11 to July 19 event.

Concerns driving the initial boycott calls reportedly stem from US foreign policy decisions, including the attempted acquisition of Greenland and threats of tariffs against European nations. Domestic issues, such as the Trump administration's handling of protests and travel restrictions, have also fueled geopolitical anxieties among some German sporting figures.

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter previously advised fans to avoid the tournament, although his own history shows opposition to boycotting the 2018 World Cup in Russia amid the Ukraine crisis. Blatter argued that football competition cannot be successfully boycotted in any host nation, according to reports at the time.

Beyond political considerations, logistical concerns persist, including high ticket prices and potential travel restrictions that might prevent supporters of some qualifying nations from attending. Nevertheless, the DFB confirmed that the German national team intends to participate fully in the competition.

The organization expressed its desire for fair competition among qualified teams next summer. The DFB hopes fans globally will celebrate a peaceful football festival, drawing parallels to the successful 2024 European Championship hosted in Germany.
